CEE Professor Dr. Robert Siegrist completed a recent week-long trip to Thailand during which he delivered an invited lecture on onsite water reclamation and reuse and a day-long workshop on remediation of contaminated land and water at Kasetsart University in Bangkok. Dr. Siegrist also had meetings with university officials and government staff.
National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center Award - America's cities face a looming water crisis, driven by climate change, growing population and a crumbling infrastructure. Recognizing the critical importance of this issue, the National Science Foundation has selected Colorado School of Mines to join a partnership of four U.S. universities that addresses this challenge by developing new, sustainable ways to manage urban water.

CEE Assistant Professor Dr. Judith Wang is working with Mrs. Allison Silvaggio of the STEM Magnet Lab School in Northglenn, Colorado, to help introduce kindergartnerers and 2nd graders to engineering and the engineering design process. Mrs. Silvaggio has coordinated learning modules in which Dr. Wang helps guide these young students through the engineering design and build process, building pretzel and candy bridges and gumdrop and toothpick trusses. The students learn to see engineering as an inventive and fun process that involves teamwork, creativity, and experimentation.
Dr Tissa Illangasekare from the Civil & Environmental Engineering Department has been named the 2012 Henry Darcy Medalist by the European Geoscience Union (EGU).This is the highest honor given to an individual for scientific achievements in water resources research and water resources engineering and management by the EGU. Past recipients have been well known European hydrologists and water engineers. Dr Illangasekare will receive the medal at the EGU meeting in Vienna in April 2012, where he will deliver the award lecture.
CEE Professor Receives DOE Award - Dr. Tzahi Cath, assistant professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Colorado School of Mines, was awarded a new research grant from DOE. The new project titled "Novel Engineered Osmosis Technology: A comprehensive Approach to the Treatment and Reuse of Produced Water and Drilling Wastewater" will explore novel technologies for treatment and reuse of wastewater in the oil and gas industry. The $1.3M project will extend over two years in which new pilot test systems will be designed, constructed, and tested in the field. Hydration Technology Innovations, a lead membrane developer and manufacturer, will be the major industry partner on this project.
