DEFINITIONS

FRESHMAN COHORT – FIRST-TIME, FULL TIME (12 CREDITS) NEW FRESHMEN

TRANSFER COHORT – FIRST-TIME, FULL TIME (12 CREDITS) NEW TRANSFER


A persistence rate is the percentage of students in a given cohort who are enrolled at Colorado School of
Mines in a specified term or are not enrolled in the specified term but have graduated from CSM between
matriculation and that term. The number of students in the cohort is the denominator of the rate; the
number of students enrolled or who have graduated but not enrolled one year later is the numerator of the
rate.

A graduation rate is the percentage of students in a given cohort who have graduated within a specified
period of time. The number of students in the cohort is the denominator of the rate; the number of
students who graduated is the numerator of the rate. NOTE: Starting in fall 2015 report, the graduation
rate period of time was changed from using fiscal year to academic year terms.

Once a student is in the cohort, they remain in the cohort, even if they switch to part-time or drop out.
However, adjustments can be made to the initial cohort for exclusions, which include the death of a
student, permanent disability, military deployment, or an official church mission.
